You take showers, wash dishes, do laundry and use water for a variety of reasons in your home. But did you know that flushing your toilet accounts for 40% of your home's water usage? That is a lot of flushing. This can be wasteful and can even cost you money on your water utility bill each month.
It makes a lot of sense to try and minimize the amount of water that is being used by your toilet each day. There are several different ways that you can save water when it comes to your toilet. Some of these suggestions will require you to employ the services of a plumber but some of them you can simply do by yourself.
- Check for Running Water. Many toilets tanks will have leaks that are allowing water to leak from the tank and into the bowl without it even being flushed. This can waste a lot of water each year. To find out if the tank is leaking into the bowl, put some colored die into the tank. If you begin to see that color running into the bowl when you have not even flushed the toilet, you have a leak that needs to be repaired. You can hire a plumber to fix the leak for you.
- Reduce the Amount of Water Used. Most toilet bowls will use a set amount of water each time you flush. You can reduce that amount of water very simply. By taking a half gallon jug and filling it with some sand and water and putting it in the toilet tank, you can displace some of the water that would be used each time you flush. This can save you thousands of gallons of water each year.
- Install Low Flow Toilet. A low flow toilet will use a lot less water each time you flush it. By having a plumber install this low flow toilet, you could save over $100 a year on your water utility bill.
- Wait to Flush. A saying that has been going around for a while says, "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown flush it down." What this is saying is that you can wait to flush the toilet after using the bathroom if you have not gone "number 2." This can actually save you a lot of water and flushes over time.
These ways to reduce the amount of water that your toilet uses are great ways to conserve water and save money. A plumber (such as one from Clearwater Plumbing) can help with some of the repairs and installations that are required for some of these suggestions.
